The town of Terezín, located near the confluence of the Elbe and Ohře rivers, was founded as a fortress in 1780 under Emperor Joseph II to protect the Czech border against attack from the north. In its time, Terezín was the jewel of today's northern Bohemia, yet today it is better known for the sad events of World War II. The history of the town and the fortress can be seen in an exhibition in Retranchement 5, which also houses a visitor centre. In addition, you can also walk the walls or explore the underground passages with a guide. Perhaps the most important reminder of the events of World War II is the Terezín Memorial in the Small Fortress. The Terezín Riding School, the Ghetto Museum, the Terezín Automobile Museum and others are also worth a visit.
